PRESS RELEASE

14TH ANNUAL ARTISTS’ SOAPBOX DERBY
Where Art Meets Gravity…and Rolls

Donskoj & Co. and the City of Kingston are proud to announce the 14th Annual Artists’ Soapbox Derby, Sunday, August 17th beginning at 1:00 PM on Lower Broadway in the historic Rondout section of Kingston. A combination of a traditional soapbox derby and kinetic sculpture competition, the Derby has gone far beyond the expectations of founders George and Nancy Donskoj, who created the event in 1995 to encourage community participation in the arts and generate commercial activity. Fourteen years later, the event
has grown to become a summertime tradition attracting over 7,000 spectators last year.

The Artists’ Soapbox Derby is about art not speed.  Awards are based on a combination of creativity and engineering.  Over $2,500 in cash prizes will be awarded in
Adult, Youth and Family Group categories.  Each year a different group from the art world is enlisted to perform judging duties. This year the fine folks at KMOCA (Kingston Museum of Contemporary Arts) have accepted the challenge. In its third year of operation KMOCA is a multi-use art space which has hosted a variety of artists from numerous cities and countries, but remains a neighborhood place. They are taking their assignment very seriously because they’ve invited Representatives of Berlin’s “Erdanziehung Institut” (“Gravity Institution”) to help with the judging. It turns out they’re fans, who knew?” says KMOCA founder Adam Snyder,
who first met members of the Institut on a routine trip to
Berlin seven years ago.

Leading the opening procession will be puppeteer, Mark Alexander, accompanied by several members of his Mortal Beasts & Deities troupe.  Mark and his group of larger than life stilt dancing puppeteers will parade down the Derby course, “creating controlled mayhem and earnest frivolity”. Following Mark will be the Walking On Air Procession and Performance, enacting and telling the story of the Great Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge, including its' construction, life, burning and revitalization as a Walkway with the Grand Opening (called Walking On Air) as part of the Hudson Fulton Champlain Quadricentennial.

Providing color commentary at the top of the hill with his own brand of Brooklyn humor will be Studio Stu.  The Hudson Valley’s own independent award winning radio station, WKZE 98.1,will keep the spectators informed and entertained near the Judging Stand while the entrants make their way to the finish line.

After the last entry has gone down the hill POOK and the Energy Dance Group will take us to the award ceremony in TR Gallo Park. Energy is an award-winning hip hop dance troupe that has performed throughout the region including Jacob's Pillow and the Apollo Theater.  They won the top prize in BET's dance competition in 2006 and have thrilled audiences with their artistry, enthusiasm and talent.  POOK, the Percussion Orchestra of Kingston, celebrated its tenth anniversary last year and is well known to local audiences through its performances at festivals, schools and community centers. The group plays original arrangements of traditional rhythms from throughout the world with a special focus on the music of Africa and the Caribbean. Both ensembles are programs of the Center for Creative Education based in midtown Kingston.

Performing during the awards ceremony will be Breakaway, made up of local favorites Robin Baker on vocals, Barry Lindsay on guitars, Joe Ruffini on drums, and Sir Desmond Duke on bass. This is a fun band that will keep you rocking and rolling while waiting for the winners to be announced! Breakaway was voted the Best New Band in the Hudson Valley in a 2006 RBJD Listener's poll.
